Second Bone Symposium Explores the Implications of New Regenerative Therapies for Clinical Practice

Hats off to Dr Myron Nevins and Quintessence International Publishing Group for another fabulous symposium! The Second Bone Symposium, generously sponsored by Osteohealth, took place May 1819 at the Grand Hyatt in beautiful downtown San Francisco. About 200 dentists and dental specialists from 15 countries attended the two-day affair, which included a scientific exhibition comprising 22 dental product manufacturers. The sessions began each day with an introduction by moderator Dr Nicola De Angelis and featured well-documented presentations by program chair Dr Myron Nevins and eight other recognized clinicians and researchers, including Drs Michael Carstens, William Giannobile, David Kim, Craig Misch, Marc Nevins, Michael Pikos, Maurice Salama, and Atsuhiko Yamamoto. The first day opened with a presentation describing the early development of growth factor therapies for periodontal and bone regeneration and was followed with a review of emerging clinical therapies in growth factor biology. The afternoon lectures focused on the clinical applications of rhBMP-2 for the repair of buccal wall defects and sinus bone grafting, a xenogenic porcine bilayer collagen matrix to augment the zone of keratinized tissue around teeth, and rhPDGF-BB for esthetic implant site development. The second day featured lectures that compared the use of autogenous bone with tissue engineering protocols for alveolar ridge augmentation; identified risk factors that can jeopardize regeneration-enhanced prosthetic results and how to overcome them; demonstrated how an Er:YAG laser can be used in the treatment of peri-implantitis to safely decontaminate the implants surface; and described cutting-edge surgical concepts of cleft lip/palate repair. When all was said and done, attendees left with the confidence to use the products available and perform the techniques necessary to provide the best treatment to their patients.
