This is a case report of a female, 33 years of age, with multiple missing posterior teeth in
both arches, in addition to several diastemas in the anterior segment, with an edge-to-edge
anterior relationship. Periodontal evaluation revealed generalized marginal gingivitis, 4 mm
of marginal bone loss (type III) mesial to the mandibular central incisors, and gingival
retraction in the labial, distal, and lingual aspects of both teeth. Periodontal treatment was
performed prior to comprehensive orthodontic treatment and periodic control was maintained
during active treatment. Orthodontic therapy concentrated on closing the diastemas
between the mandibular central incisors using a segmented drop-loop (statically determinate
system) to achieve maximum force and moment control. During the space closure in
the mandibular arch, maxillary diastemas were also closed. The anterior relationship and
esthetics improved dramatically. World J Orthod 2003;4:31–35.
