A Frontal Attach on Orthodontic Diagnosis

T. M. Graber, DMD, MSD, PhD, Odont Dr hc, DSc, ScD, MD, FRCS

Patients view themselves from the frontal perspective. But Sam Weinstein, the eminent orthodontic teacher, said, “We are essentially a generation of profiles, looking only at the lateral cephalometric image!” Part 2 of the landmark article by Grummons and Ricketts again addresses the long-neglected transverse dimension via the PA cephalogram. This article is a team effort of the immortal “Rick”, who departed this world during the writing, and Duane Grummons, a friend and disciple of Ricketts, and authority in his own right. For too long, we have concentrated on the anteroposterior and vertical skeletal dimension via myriad measurements of lateral cephalometric tracings. Rapid palatal expansion is a very popular clinical procedure, too often based on the photographs and plaster study cast only. This two-part landmark article will become assigned reading for a generation of orthodontic residents and perceptive clinicians. Rick could not ask for a more fitting tribute!
