Within the last decade a new field of ‘tissue engineering’ or ‘regenerative medicine’ has emerged that offers a new and exciting alternative for soft tissue reconstruction. This review discusses the advantages and disadvantages of different approaches to development of an oral mucosa equivalent. It also includes future research directions in this exciting area of repair and regeneration of oral mucosa.
