Treatment of Periimplant Lesions Using Different Laser Systems

Lasers have a wide spectrum of applications in modern implant dentistry. Second-stage surgery of submerged implants, removal of periimplant gingival overgrowth, and the treatment of periimplantitis are the indicators in the periimplant tissues. This report presents the state-of-the-art of different laser systems in the removal of periimplant hyperplasias, as well as the treatment of periimplant bony defects. Taking the scientific data on laser-induced damage to the implant surface and the laserís significant antibacterial effects into consideration, we were able to decontaminate the infected implant surfaces without damaging them. The selection of the appropriate laser wavelengths was based on the evaluation of the recent literature and the level of implant temperature changes during laser application. The clinical case reports presented here demonstrate the successful laser-assisted treatment of mucositis and periimplantitis using different surgical lasers, ie, the CO2 and diode (980 nm) lasers as representative laser wavelengths for these indications.
