CO2 Laser Therapy for Intraoral Hemangiomas

Purpose: Intraoral hemangiomas are benign neoformations of fine blood vessels in the mucosal region, which can cause extensive bleeding during excision by conventional surgical methods. For this reason, advantage is increasingly being taken of the coagulative effect of superpulsed laser beams, which, as in the CO2 laser, lead to a virtually painless vaporization of tissue. Materials and Methods: Fifty-two hemangiomas on the inner cheek wall, at the edge of the tongue, and on the lip were treated in a minimally invasive and recurrence-free manner with the CO 2 laser. Results: In all cases, postoperative healing ensued without irritation or complications. In some cases, signs of an extended wound-healing phase were observed. Furthermore, the differential diagnostic problems involved in Kaposi’s sarcoma are mentioned. Conclusion: Despite the fact that, in addition to the CO2 laser, numerous other alternative therapies such as sclerosis or embolization are available, the CO2 laser is particularly well suited for surgical removal of intraoral hemangiomas because it offers a bloodless operational technique and avoids tissue damage.
