Digital extraoral radiography is still not as widespread in general dental practice as digital intraoral radiography, but an increasing number of clinics are converting to digital imaging for extraoral examinations as well. As for intraoral digital radiography systems, there are two main concepts for digital extraoral radiography, ie solid state detectors (CCD or charged couple device) and storage phosphors. Current panoramic systems can be seen in Table 1 and are also included in our homepage: http://www.odont.au.dk/rad/digitalx.htm. Image file sizes of extraoral images are of course larger than for intraoral images, with the result that the system’s software offers the option to store the images in a compressed form.
