The proceedings of the second European Symposium on Adhesive Dentistry from May 7-9, 1999 are presented. Improvements in dental materials technology and declines in the incidence of dental caries are considered as two legacies of the development of dentistry in the 20th century. Speculation about the significance of research into dental adhesives and the use of polymers in dentistry for the 21st century is presented.
