Histological and Histometric Evaluations of Bone Formation After Onlay Grafting of Xenograft

Objective: To evaluate the pattern of new bone formation after onlay grafting of xenograft (Surgibone). Material and Methods: Twenty Surgibone blocks about 20 x 95 mm were laid onto the tibial metaphysic of 10 New Zealand white rabbits and anchored with screw-type dental implants. New bone growth was identified by fluorochrome labeling. Results: The cancellous bone of the xenograft was gradually replaced with new bone from the recipient bed. Cortical graft bone was only partially replaced at 84 days. The mineral apposition rates were significantly faster in the last 2 labeling periods than in the first 3 labeling periods. It was also observed that the tibial bone was selectively absorbed and the marrow cavity greatly increased. Conclusion: In this rabbit model, Surgibone shows promise as an onlay graft to facilitate new bone formation and augment bone volume.
