Expression of hTERT mRNA in Human Odontogenic Lesions

Objective: To study hTERT mRHA expression in ameloblastoma (AB) and odontogenic keratocyst (OKC) and to investigate the genesis, development and biological characteristics of AB and OKC. Methods: hTERT mRNA expression in 54 cases of AB, 16 cases of OKC, and 7 cases with normal oral mucosa was detected by in situ hybridization. Results: The positive ratios of hTERT mRNA in AB, OKC and normal oral mucosa were 94.4% (51/54), 87.5% (14/16) and 14.3% (1/7) respectively. There was a significant statistical difference (P < 0.001). hTERT has no correlation (P > 0.05) with histological types, lesion locations or types of AB growth (unilocular or multilocular). hTERT mRNA was found in peripheral and stellate reticular cells, but not in keratinizing and degraded areas or granular cells. Conclusions: hTERT activity plays an important role in the genesis and development of AB and OKC. hTERT positivity is related to cell differentiation and clinical biological behavior. The positivity rate and signal intensity of hTERT mRNA increase with a rise in histological grading.
