Objective: To investigate the pathologic changes induced by infusion of 1% methyl violet in the parotid gland of the miniature pig. Material and Methods: Methyl violet (0.6 mL, 1.0 mL, or 4.0 mL) was injected into the parotid glands of 15 experimental miniature pigs. The parotid glands were harvested for gross and histopathologic study after 1 week, 2 weeks, 1 month, 3 months, and 6 months. Results: The pathologic changes induced by retrograde injection of methyl violet included necrosis of acinar cells, atrophy of acinar cells, and fibrosis of the gland. The ductal system underwent atrophic changes, and thrombotic obliteration of the main duct. Conclusion: Retrograde infusion of 1% methyl violet results in substantial structural pathology of the parotid gland in the miniature pig.
