Gingival Depigmentation: Two Case Reports

The gingival tissues play an important role in an esthetically pleasing smile. Gingival pigmentation results from melanin granules produced by melanoblasts. Gingival melanin hyperpigmentation is not a medical problem; however, patients often complain about the unsightly appearance of dark gums. This paper describes two case reports in which three techniques—scalpel surgery, diamond bur ablation, and electrosurgery—were used for gingival depigmentation. The results suggest that use of the diamond bur is the most effective method for achieving esthetic satisfaction and uneventful wound healing without infection or severe pain.
