Precise presentation of the results of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) is critical to the dissemination of accurate scientific information and its implementation in clinical practice. Unfortunately, authors of scientific articles may consciously or subconsciously shade the impression of their results for readers by adding “spin” to their scientific reports. Spin can be defined as specific reporting that could distort the interpretation of results and mislead readers. Spin has been estimated to be present in 18% of titles, 37% of results sections in abstracts, 58% of conclusions sections in abstracts, 29% of results sections in RCTs, 43% of discussion sections in RCTs, and 50% of conclusions sections of RCTs published in high-impact journals. This presentation will therefore explore the impact of spin on issues concerning soft tissue grafting.
