Postgraduates who wish to pursue specialist training in the United Kingdom are required to take an oral exam for Membership in the Faculty of Dental Surgery (MFDS). This book prepares candidates for the topics that will be covered and the level of knowledge that will be required. It consists of a series of clinical cases that are used to demonstrate the various ways in which several different sets of sample questions may be developed from a single clinical case scenario. Questions are framed to reflect the short-answer format of the oral exam and to emphasize the need for candidates to develop well-rounded knowledge of the clinical information presented. References are provided where applicable to highlight the need for evidence-based answers at the postgraduate level. An essential resource for those preparing for the MFDS exam or for the Membership of the Faculty of General Dental Practitioners (MFGDP) exam, which draws upon the same general body of knowledge.

Preface
Preparing for postgraduate exams in dentistry requires an enormous degree of organisation and determination. Foremost is the challenge of maintaining a balance between preparing for exams and holding down a full-time clinical post. The pressures of work in dentistry and related specialties inevitably limit the amount of exam preparation time available to candidates wishing to pursue a postgraduate career. Traditional methods include self-study, attending revision courses - either after work, whole-day, weekends, week-long - and even signing up for distance-learning packages.
The authors of this text have wide experience in the provision of revision courses of all types through their work at the Royal College of Surgeons of England in London and have had the opportunity to talk to many of the candidates attending these events. It is clear that students are very keen to be given the opportunity to put their knowledge to the test before the exams, and they have repeatedly requested question-and-answer books to use alongside their revision texts.
To this end the Faculty of Dental Surgery at the Royal College of Surgeons of England has asked the authors to put together a series of patient-based cases and scenarios that reflect the clinical material beloved of postgraduate dental exams. The questions associated with each case have been designed to reflect the type of topics likely to present in a number of postgraduate exams, most notably the current MFDS and MFGDP diets. Each clinical case has been chosen from a pool of potential examination cases. The questions reflect the diversity of material that a single clinical case can generate. The answers provided to each of the questions in the text indicate to the candidates the breadth and depth of knowledge that will be expected for success in the exams. Where relevant, references have been provided for further reading. Not every topic will be covered, as this will require further texts, but the range is broad and detailed. Candidates will be expected to read the questions asked and answer each one before moving to the answers.
Preparation is the key to performance in examinations. The authors hope that this book will go some way towards providing a useful measure to candidates of how well their studies are progressing. If weaknesses are highlighted before the exam then the text will have achieved its aim. This will, it is to be hoped, encourage further preparation, thus reducing the risk of poor performance on the big day.
Reviews
“In short, this elegant book is useful not only to its intended audience but also to undergraduate dental students and to dental practitioners.”
