Preface
The concept of osseointegration and its application to dental practice were introduced into North America at the beginning of the 1980s. Since then, many changes have taken place, not in the basic theory and to only a limited extent in surgical technique, but predominantly in the refinement and sophistication of the prosthodontic or dental restorative phase of treatment. The original edition of this book—entitled Osseointegration in Dentistry: An Introduction—has now been revised and expanded with the intention of providing the reader with insight into the developments that have taken place on the basis of further experiments and clinical experience.
It remains the intention of the editors to direct this book to the dental student, as well as to the practicing dentist, who wishes to understand the place of osseointegration in the overall scheme of oral reconstruction. Many chapters have been rewritten and other sections have been added to address previously neglected topics such as the placement of implants in the esthetic zone, variations in abutment design, and the role of osseointegrated implants in more advanced procedures. The student is again advised to follow a path of stepwise learning, proceeding from the simpler to the more complex.
