Title: Fundamentals of Periodontics, Second Edition
Newly revised and expanded, this clinically oriented text provides the essential information needed to understand periodontal diseases and deliver effective treatment. Written in a user-friendly style, it thoroughly explains the biology of the periodontium in health and disease, gives detailed instructions on patient examination, and discusses various local and systemic risk factors. Actual case scenarios illustrate how to interpret clinical evidence, make a diagnosis, and develop a treatment plan for the most common forms of disease. Six chapters are devoted to implant therapy, and four others address adjunct treatment procedures that may be needed to enhance periodontal health. With color images throughout, this textbook is as valuable a resource for general practitioners and dental hygienists as it is for students.

Preface
This book is designed as an introduction to the science and art of periodontics for students new to the subject and for clinicians who wish to expand their knowledge. The material is organized as a guide to what must be seen and what must be done in order to successfully diagnose and treat periodontal diseases.
Experts in any clinical area interpret the findings from a clinical examination by means of preformed mental patterns based on published knowledge and practical experience with patients. The expert clinician therefore quickly limits the mental “search space” to focus on the important issues for each individual patient. Students have no preformed mental patterns on which to draw for guidance. They must search exhaustively through all the pieces of information they have remembered to determine which pieces apply to the specific patient.
This book has been organized to bring the experts’ thought process to the student. Seeing the same flexible process applied to a variety of conditions, the student will gain not only information but a lens through which to view information. This is the beginning of the quick selectivity and judgment that is the essence of expertise.
This second edition has been extensively updated to incorporate substantial new biologic and practical knowledge of periodontal and implant dentistry that has become available since the first edition was published. In addition, the text has been clarified and many new figures have been added to make the knowledge especially accessible to the individual who is new to the study of dentistry.
This book is written to be as user-friendly as possible given the complexity of the subjects covered. Part I details the knowledge needed to understand periodontal diseases and their treatment, providing essential information on the examination process and how to interpret clinical findings. Part II explains the clinical management of periodontal diseases. As in the first edition, this section first explains how to determine an initial diagnosis and uses case reports to illustrate the different disease categories and suggested therapies. Special emphasis is given to various treatment outcomes. Part III deals with restorative and esthetic dentistry as they relate to periodontal therapy. New to this edition, Part IV is designed to lead the clinician through diagnosis, placement, restoration, and maintenance of cases involving implant reconstructions.
As always, we very much appreciate the tremendous contributions made by many to our understanding of the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of periodontal diseases. We are grateful to the outstanding scholars who synthesized these contributions into the chapters of this second edition.

REVIEWS
"Overall this is a worthwhile second edition since it has been extensively updated to incorporate substantial new biologic and practical knowledge that has become available or was omitted in the first edition. In addition, the text has been clarified and many new figures have been added to make the information more accessible to those who are new to the study of periodontics or wish an update."

"...To me the text was very satisfying to read. I especially enjoyed the way in which the authors chose questions as subheadings. This stimulates interest and makes for easy reference while reading a chapter. Although this is an academic textbook, it contains a rich assortment of high quality and cleverly used tables, animated illustrations and colour clinical pictures..."
